Isn't the true madness to ignore climate change and the mass destruction it will bring?

But this debate is in the wrong thread. This thread is 'What if we'd never had fossil fuels?'

But the points are very directly related; without fossil fuels the world would not now be in this disastrous and man made run-away warming phase. Hell in a handcart fuelled by fossils...

No fossils fuels means no fossils which means no life - so no point in question.
I think the idea was that although there's life, what if its fossilised form hadn't been exploited as fuel.
Yes, get the thread back on track. If it's possible for all PHers - even Eric - not to be too literal, imagine a crazy alternate universe where dead things don't turn in to hydrocarbons.

And for clarity, I'm not remotely interested in what will happen when fossil fuels run out, I want to imagine what it would be like if they never existed.
So you mean if for example an insect or bacteria evolved that consumed the hydrocarbons.

I think wood, forestation and charcoal production would have formed into a massive industry which would have formed the basis for the 'industrial revolution', would we have electricity? computers would probably be pretty much impossible, but we would find a way to keep technology moving forward, the alpha, beta & gamma radiation discoveries would be a massive leap forward.

Typo Eric, typo. Funny someone so un-pedantic as your good-self should have spotted it though.

You're up one now, but given the drivel you regularly post - including turgidly on this very thread - I suspect revenge could come soon!
I await with trepidation.

Whatever may or may not have been done, that is the world and that is what you have to live in. So you can either cry and tear your hair out and parade your 'The End Is Nigh' sandwich board, or just get on with life. Like everyone else smile

Actually, you could join a Guardian forum instead and then everyone will agree with you.

OK for you to say in the lucky position of a citizen of the profligate west. What about the poor and exploited in the third world, forced to watch their waterholes and rivers parch, their crops perish, their animals starve and their families die. Or the islanders soon to be submerged like those poor Maldivians? You could help to stop this...

So you can either cry and tear your hair out and parade your 'The End Is Nigh' sandwich board,

Can we have a 'Green' ethical sub-forum on PH instead?

Me too. Especially as, from what I've heard about them, the inhabitants seem less sophisticated and less able to cope than those in the Maldives, or the Innuit.

If there had been no fossil fuels then the world would still be a lovely, temperate one with a stable and life enriching climate controlled by nature. Without the current climate chaos and spectre of disastrous man made global warming.

Hundreds of thousands would not have died due to otherwise non-happening extreme weather events such as Katrina.

Africans and others wouldn't now be perishing through extreme, unsustainable heat.

Millions would not be facing the uncertain future presented by dangerous sea level rise, the submerging of island nations, the desertification of once green and pleasant environments, crop failure, mass starvation and the looming water wars.

And thousands of species such as the iconic polar bear would not be battling certain extinction.

All so we can drive to the shops, watch TV and fly off on holiday. Fossil fuels have been a tragedy.
Not sure if serious but, just in case...

Your repeated use of the word 'denialist' is very interesting. The notable other use of this word is in the context of the Nazi holocaust, and no doubt is intended to engender the same emotions. It also assumes that your position is beyond reproach, and that anyone who dares disagree is somehow blaspheming and belittled. And thus the moral high ground is neatly taken before anyone realises.

This is how socialists convert the people - calculated use of soundbytes, repeated until they become mantra, together with a few ill-joined facts to add conviction and suit their argument. They love to belittle ordinary people from a position of assumed superiority with their much-practiced soundbyte arguments, and usually win because they get so much practice, regardless of whether what they say makes any real sense. Rarely does it stand critical examination. It is a triumph of education beyond the point of the recipient to deal with it.

But the troll is well fed now.

Looks like you're getting a bit too into this so I'll desist.

What's the best way to show up the stupidity and futility of zealots' arguments, and to make others suspicious, scathing and hateful towards them? Repeat the mantras and get non-nutters to spot and despise the carp. A false flag 'mirror to their madness' operation.

I think Anon, your postings are indicative of someone who is posting just to be argumentative.

Are you a supporter of the Man Made Global Warming theory or are you suggesting something else?

And, to be honest, it has precious little to do with the thread title.

Pot, kettle.

Get over yourself Eric. You've run arguments on beyond their sell by date on many a thread.

I suspect you've looked at the climate threads here sometimes? If so and you noted any of my posts you would know my real view.

And 'it' (even if I believed what I'd suggested) has everything to do with the title; certainly as much as your smart arse 'the thread is meaningless because without fossils nothing would ever have been alive' prattery.

Hate giving up on an argument don't you, even when it runs the risk of suggesting you are a hypocrite. Has your psychologist ever suggested treatment for short man syndrome?

I gave up on the climate change threads ages ago as they had just got long, tedious and boring.

A bit like this one is becoming.

Climate change is tangential to the main question, at best.
