So called quiet boil kettles will stay quiet if they are descaled maybe once a fortnight, depending on use, with something like 'Oust'.

I got a 'bells-and-whistles' Dualite once but was so miffed by the noise it made I took it back and now have a Cuisinart - which did the same. So I tried some descaler and whaddya know !

I believe the noise is caused when the bubbles produced adjacent to the element rise, and because they expand as they rise due to lower water pressure, they burst. The noise we hear is that expansion and the bubbles bursting.

Plastic kettles - the sound does not bounce (echo) off the surface as well as in metal kettles (which resonate quite well).

Sound feasible?

Yes, boiling water in a pan is fairly noisy too.
