That's a ram-air parachute.
If it's anything like the ones I've used for skydiving, it's not drifting, it's steerable and has pitch authority up to and including going back up (until running out of forward momentum)
Sorry for being by a bit thick, but is the parachute holding the stage, steerable remotely then?

More likely to be steered autonomously by an onboard computer, homing in on a signal from the catcher boat

The launch feed just showed an on board view from MR Steven looking up from below the net, and a view from a drone flying up in front of if.

Could be seeing a live feed of a fairing recovery (attempt...)

I suspect the groan in the background means they missed catching the fairing frown

NASA is their biggest government customer and Iridium their biggest commercial one. Kinda funny that they're launching satellites for them both at the same time.

BTW This is the fastest relaunch of a Falcon 9 rocket.

It first went up on 7th January (The ill -fated Zuma mission) and now again on 22nd May.

That's 4 months and 15 days (or 136 days) - for a Block 4.

The Block 5 should be able to get that down quite a bit. Doubt we'll ever see a 48 hour turnaround, but you never know. The Air Force might get excited about that capability if they can demo it.

I didn't, but I wasn't paying close attention to the in between bits.

They're saying that the parachutes on both fairings deployed OK, but Mr Steven just failed to grab one.

Still, other than that it was a perfect mission. The customers will be happy.

So great to see some exciting and inspiring space engineering going on again.

Bezos getting ready to pump his 131 billion fortune into blue origin and new glen.

Should be an great future for space travel.
