The first Atlas V mission of the year is expected to launch from Cape Canaveral at 7pm GMT (2pm EST) on Friday 21st.

It'll be the first time Atlas V has flown in a "511" configuration - A 5.4-meter diameter fairing, a single solid rocket booster and a single RL10 engine on the rocket’s Centaur upper stage.

It'll launch a couple of "Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program" or GSSAP satellites for the US Space Force.

Astra finally lifted off OK, but it looks like there was an issue with staging - from the video feed it looks like the 2nd stage is tumbling frown

Looked like the 2nd stage was ejected inside the fairing frown

Bugger - now reported that shortly after capture the chopper pilot released it due to 'load differences' compared to training.

Not sure if this simply means it was heavier than expected due to remaining propellant

The helicopter pilot wasn't happy with it and released it. Probably started spinning dangerously in the helicopter downwash.

They've fished it out of the sea in one piece though, so it may fly again.

They were so close! Catch and release.
Happy shes on a ship back home. Really hope they got lots of data on what made them decide to release, and what they can do to prevent it happening again, or at least increase chances of successful catch.

Would also be intrigued how the Graphine? heat shield performed too.

Anyway we may need to start a Rocket lab Topic, these guys are making some fantastic advancements and really pushing on.

Catching a falling booster with a manned helicopter just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
