The mind truly boggles when you try to rationalise all this.
The idea that, barring some substantial developments in our understanding of physics, we can never reach any of those entities is pretty salutary.

And it's like that in every direction, mind boggling.

Astronomy is one those fields where the more you know, the more you realise how little you do know.

There’s between 100 billion and 400 billion stars in our galaxy alone.

Using the sand analogy, how much sand is that in buckets?

ETA Quora says using average grain size, 43 million in one bucket

So for 300 billion stars I make that 7000 odd buckets if my calculation is correct.

Somewhere between not many and a lot, depending on bucket size and sand size used … 😉

I made the calculation using « average » size above, I think!

7000 buckets!

Yes, but Quora also says up to 193 billion grains/bucket for extremely fine sand so that would be between about half a bucket and two buckets … so ….

There's about 100B neurons in the human brain, [each with 15K connections], so about as many stars [lower limit] as in the galaxy. It's like the galaxy shrunk into your head.

Hows about them onions eh? smile

Quota also says 5.9 million for the coarsest sand which would make 51 thousand buckets.

So…what should we do?

I think the best option is to invest in bucket manufacturers …

That is amazing. The more you zoom in, the more detail you begin to see. In one of the (gravity distorted) galaxies you can see what looks like a jet emerging from its core. This is amazing considering we are looking at very early activity right at the dawn of the universe.

I struggle to get my head round it all, if the universe started as a big bang and then expanded to today, then it either it wouldn’t be that far away 13b years ago or it’s not there now.

Yeah, that is a fantastic way to present it.

I can't even begin to get my head around the scale of this. It bothers me how incomprehensible it is.
