No idea why, I was just researching musket balls…the alloys were made of lead and tin which would explain the magnetism
Tin isn't magnetic, so we can park that theory in the bin smile

You may be thinking of 'tin cans' - which are mostly steel...

I have found lots of musket balls, many different sizes, but only one that had any iron in it, and it was much larger so maybe canister shot.

A perhaps more likely possibility - someone hunting for birds with a catapult and steel ball bearings.

With reference to the photo, it's a damn funny ball bearing...

Awesome! Certainly has the right characteristics to be a meteorite from those pics and description. Will ask my wife later as this is her area of expertise smile
Thanks, I'd be interested to hear her opinion
I hope she hasn’t left him
Lol sorry totally forgot about this.

Her view is it certainly could be a meteorite from the pic but could also be a random something else….def metal content tho! If you like I can PM you the details of her expert….but he will def need to actually see it in person apparently.

Ok a roughly ball shaped bit of steel fired from a catapult after a bird.. I think it’s the most likely scenario.

...and while I can't remember the details it was decided it was likely iron age slag.
I've been on a night out in Hull as well.
Funniest thing I've read on PH for ages!

Size isn't given but it looks far too small to be a cannonball. I thought possibly a musket ball but they were lead so not magnetic. It also looks wrong for that.

I'll go for meteorite.
Hey I’m from Hull. It’s not that bad.

Well it is but there’s always Bradford on levels of awful.
My Dad always referred to “those girls” as “Grimsby Girls”

Well, at least she should be easy to entice home with a trail of bread crumbs.

A few hundred or so years ago I'm sure some farmer could have just dropped a random bit of broken iron mongery into the tree 'out of the way' and it's just grown around it?

I'd be happy for him to see it in person!
