Snap-On Tools

Snap-On tools – as a private individual buy and not as a business purchase, is it the same price to buy Snap-On tools from their site or cheaper through the Agent?

Any advise, please?

I have never seen them privately other than fleebay etc

Why Snap-On though? excellent but Halfauds do some great tools that also carry a lifetime warrenty, not too mention save ya'self a chuffin fortune to buy more, erm.... tools!

Snap-on tools to make your living, but if it's just for home halfords would be a better option.

This.....The pro version come with a lifetime warranty and even the cheaper stuff isn't bad. There are many other makes out there as well which are excellent.

I'm looking for a set of ratchet combinations in A/F sizes.
Been looking on eBay but all are metric.
Any advise on that ??

I don't actually know, but if you can give me an example I will ask for you.
What you do get from the dealer is special offers and new items.
The cheapest place to buy Snap-on is Ebay of course, good for basic stuff, but the special and rare isn't on there usually.

Having been in the trade for 20 odd years, I dont totally agree with the "must be Snap-on" remark.
Having lost an entire roll cab with 10 years of tools, I looked at what I needed rather than replace it all with SO.
I have a selection of Halfords pro, Craftsman (US) and S-O. Yes, the best tools are S.O, but the costs far outweigh thenfits. A ham fisted monkey will still round a fixing whether using a £5 or £50 spanner. Halfords pro ring and ratchet spanner sets are superb value for money and only recently has the 8mm failed - due to abuse from someone else borrowing it.. Get S-O ratchets and flank drive sockets though again nothing wrong with the Halfords stuff. Plus invest in a set of impact sockets - I got a draper set for £30 which saves the 3/8 drive.

halford did do the a/f ratchet combinations spanners. i missed out on a set when there were on sale (the end of line). £25. balls.

now the sets on fleabay, etcc are £70+

Your Snap-on Tools dealer has at least a 40% margin so you may be able to get him to do a deal for you.

I believe that if you are using the tools all day everyday and earning a living from them then they may be worthwhile but for a hammer chewer like me good quality cheaper alternatives can be equally as good.

40%, at the very best on very few items, less than half that on the everyday stuff

Depends on what you mean by 'everyday stuff'. Spanners and tools with the Snap-on name will certainly have 40% margin. There are some circumstances where some dealers will even get a little more

Unless of course they have changed the deal between the distribution centre and the dealers recently

Of course a Dealer won't want to give away all of his profit but if he is sensible he'll be prepared to give a sensible discount for regular customers.

Can't think where you get the 40% plus figure from. can't ever remember it being that high

For the home mechanic I firmly believe that Halfords tools bought with their Trade Card cannot be beaten. I needed an 11mm ring spanner today which I picked up for £2.69!

Employees bought at cost. I have some Snap-on Tools I bought at cost.

I was in car repairs for 40yrs and I still have my snap on tool kit but if I need to buy anything now its,Sealey,Stanley etc or the one`s mentioned above.They are just as good and a fraction of the price.Mind you there is some total crap about,like the spanners at steam rallies at £1 each.Its nice to work with the best but snap on are so expensive.I had to have my mechanics hand tools on a separate part of my business insurance,just one mechanics chest was over £15K to replace.As a professional snap on tools where very good for supplying that odd shaped socket,spanner,bar or what ever for use on a particular job on a certain model.Also just show a damaged snap on tool to the agent and it will be replaced with out question.

A few random comments on Snap on tools etc . Unless it has changed 30% is the diff between what the dealer pays and the list price.-- they are good possibly some of the best available , but in my op some of the other stuff available is plenty good enough for home/hobby use , even lower end pro use this certainly includes Halfords pro series! which carries a sim warranty to Snapon . It is too expensive to consider for light home use. If you are buying a large amount from a dealer then he MAY ease the price a little it really depends on how well his bussines is at the time , some stuff is discounted now and again ,end of lines etc but it is random and certainly not a regular thing. These comments are based on long term use of both brands mentioned and a period of actually being a dealer so I do know a little of what I'm talking about.HTH

If you were only getting 30% then you weren't getting the standard deal.
