Bad cat?

Was driving along the motorway this morning when I heard a pop sound. There is now no acceleration, engine dies when at idle but revs smoothly so dont suspect ignition faults, also starts okay. Which leads me to think it is part of the exhaust system, mainly the Catalytic Converter. Am I right in thinking that?

Unlikely- cats normally fail by melting or breaking up over a period, and blocking the exhaust in the process.
