Other work stopped play.

Gearbox seal was weeping so this is being sorted first - I do not like leaks.

Weather now closing in, even here in London.

I will update when done.

Hope I don't need to use the services of Middlesex Re-bore frown

Doesn't mean anything unfortunately. The symptoms for bad glow plugs & a minor leak in the system (for example) are very similar, hard to start after a period of standing but run perfectly for the rest of the day. It's simple to test your glow plugs before removing.

They have been tested as you suggest and all four are dead!

But nearly every direct injection engine will start quite happily without glowplugs until it gets seriously cold, -5ish. They're mainly used for emission purposes.
