I too had similar lack of success with the cheap compression tester, mine looks identical to the OP.

The seller was quick to refund and didn't ask for it to be sent back so I guess they commonly fail.

The box now houses a proper one bought from Machine Mart.

I had one of these cheap testers. I assumed the calibration was inaccurate but the main thing is the difference between cylinders.
