Hi

So my ever faithful skoda pickup has picked up a few January glitches.

First is the battery light. It started coming on but a quick Rev would get rid of it. Now it's being a bit of a pain and staying on longer. Going to check the battery - alternator connections tomorrow - anything else
I should look at?

Secondly, the speedo has stopped working. Presume there's a cable from somewhere in the engine bay to the speedo? Any idea where it would be located?

Finally, the wipers are getting stuck, think the motor is running out of juice - all it's doing it clicking as it tries to push them up. Tips for fitting a new one?

Thanks!

Engine bay which may help - if not just absorb the power it holds within.

Got a soft spot for those overhead valve Skoda engines!

Sounds like your alternator regulator or brushes are shot. Get a multimeter on it and see what it's kicking out.

I imagine the speedo will be electronic, with a sensor reading off the gearbox (differential). The sensor might be bad, or there might be an issue in the instrument binnacle. Not sure how to diagnose other than trial and error really.

Wiper problem sounds mechanical to me- i.e. a problem with the linkage rather than the motor. get in there with some light oil and make sure that everything which should move, moves, and everything which shouldn't, stays.

It's an old fashioned cable speedo - cable connects to the speedo drive on top of the gearbox and it's not too bad for access as far as I remember

Wiper motor isn't too hard to access I don't think although I never bothered fixing my failing one...

Alternator regulator problems are common.

Alternator regulator problems are quite common on these but need to be attended to as there prone to going from not charging to overcharging, boiling the batteries and frying the ECUs.

Brilliant - thank you everyone for your help.

I will change the alt reg ASAP. At least I can't complain there's not much room in the engine bay...

The wipers have been poor for a while - now, having to have an arm out the window and lift them to help them on their way, I think it's time for a change!
