Been without a car for 3 days now could do with getting this sorted. I bought the car a 5 days ago so has not even worked most of the time I've owned it!

So here's what happened, I was driving around a round about took an exit, hit the gas and the car simply died.

My first thoughts were ah a fuel delivery problem, car off and back on brings no noise from the sender unit under the rear seats (not sure if I should hear the tandem pump in the engine bay)

What I heard was a faint click and then one more click a second or so later exactly like a relay closing a circuit then opening it again, removed relay 109 and the click goes away. Replaced the relay, engine cranks and cranks with no fire. Inspected the relay I took off and it's fine, so now the confusion starts for me

I can't hear the sender unit purging, so ran a live straight too it, it purges. Try to fire the car, nothing!

I don't even know if there is a lifter pump with the sender on my model but I have been told even if there is the tandem pump in the front produces enough power to suck up from the tank.

So I remove a fuel in line from the rail mate turns on the ignition to find no fuel getting to the rail at all.

So now I'm left thinking it's one of either my fuel pumps but I'm not sure weather it's going to be the tandem the sender or what as I can't hear any purge.

Spoke to a friend and he reckons to close the circuit and purge both pumps the Ecu needs to read resistance from the actual pump. With no resistance read the relay will simply open the circuit again and let neither pump purge at all, does this sound right?

The following steps have been taken

Removed the fuel filter and fitted new one filled it etc

New cam shaft sensors and crank or whatever they were lol.

New Bosch maf

Connected live to sender and it ran the first time (made the purging noise continually) and now it doesn't?

Checked fuses

Replaced all of the relays basically.

(109 is still clicking but I have a glow plug light on)

Ok lifter is now working fuel is getting to filter and past filter, now leading me to think the tandem pump has failed?

Timing belt hasn't jumped a couple of teeth has it?

I have now come across 3 VW PD engines where the cam belt has stripped out at least 6 inches of the teeth and only jumped 1 tooth on the timing because the tensioner is so strong it seems to be able to carry on turning all the pulleys by friction alone. In all 3 cases the engine would fire up on easy start or carb cleaner no bother but will not activate its own fuel system, all 3 escaped damage and simply required a new belt kit.

Sounds like the crankshaft position sensor has failed. Parents seat Toledo did the very same thing. Stalled at a t. Junction and wouldn't start again.
