I've just bought a cherry picker that at present is mounted on a four wheel narrow push trailer.

I'd like to make it car towable but to keep the ability to get it through a 1.1m gateway.

Therefore what i need is to build an axle (braked) that will collapse down to 1.1m and extend to about 2m when used on the road. I envisage three tubes that can slide within one another and suspenion units mounted on the ends.

Has anyone any knowledge of this or suggestions on sizing of tubing or how to get the suspension units mounted inside the tubes bearing in mind I suppose they cannot be welded in direct to the casing as it will melt the rubber inside?

This kind of arrangement is used on Niftylift type cherry pickers but I dont know whether they are braked?

Weight is approx 1.5 tonnes.

Any trailer engineers present 😊
