I was in Lidl earlier and saw they were selling 10w40 semi synth oil - 12 quid for 5 litres

I wouldn't normally consider cheap oil but it does make you wonder what the stuff is like, I was wondering if anyone here had used it?

I have a motor to break in soon, not a full rebuild as such but new rings and bearings and I was contemplating trying it as break in oil as it'll just get used for 250 miles or so and dumped anyway.

Thoughts?

Does it give any info re approval ratings/spec? If it matches (or exceeds) the appropriate specs it should be fine.

FYI, ECP do 5 litres of 10w40 semi-synth for £18 (down to £16.19 with the code 'clearance' at checkout).

For 'break-in' oil, you need none of the usual oil additives which are there to prolong it's useful life, because you're going to chuck the first fill after about 500 miles, yes?
What you do need is lots of ZDDP, so I always buy the cheapest supermarket oil, which is always non-synthetic and will contain little if any of the detergents and wear inhibitors. I then add some ZDDP from a bottle, "Lucas Break-in Oil Additive". The price of that puts the mix up to normal synthetic oil cost, but I know that I'm using it appropriately.

Sounds like the stuff is required more for older engines but it can't do any harm... Maybe a bottle of addative and some cheapo oil is the way to go for a few hundred miles then change to full synth.

FYI it's a DC2 Integra type R motor B18C

Same price for 5 litres of semi synth 10w40 from Halfords, didn't realise how cheaply boggo standard oil could be bought to be honest..!

There's a few on eBay, known brands too..

Might just plum for some of this and some zddp additive. Few hundred miles then dump for some full synth shell/Mobil 1 etc etc

With the frequent discount codes that pop up for Euro Car Parts, Car Parts 4 Less, I usually get my Shell Helix Ultra for about £16 for 5l
