In reality I mean trimming ...

The car is almost as wide as the gap and I keep catching it - not worth refurbing wheels until I sell the car !

You can see the issue here.

Could take 1 - 2 inches off the top left hand edge- it could even be cut on the diagonal stop me catching the wheel / bodywork, without effecting the structural integrity of the lift ? Noting I do not want to trim so much off as to expose the pulley wheel.

I think I can - what do we think ?

Thanks

I presume that isn't just a flat panel, but a formed U-channel or similar?
I think you could trim it by a diagonal cut, as long as you replaced what was removed by a slanted fillet, welded in to the best standard.
If you aren't a skilled welder, then might be better to get one in, for this safety-critical situation.

I agree with Johns comments completely

Just curious.

What's a "slanted fillet" ?

A triangle.
Make the square in front of you into a triangle with the sharp point to the left is the best I can do without doing a line drawing on it.

Instead of cutting and gaining not much, what if you put a thick plank of wood on the lift, bringing up the level to just above the block that you were going to cut off?

This sounds far too sensible.

Thank you - will go with the block of wood - although clearance is tight for that aswell !!

Please excuse some funny paint skillz, you say clearance is tight, I meant put it here.

I agree the side of the car is still very close to the side of lift though!
