If you read through the thread before this there are many glowing recommendations for Halfords Pro, they are guaranteed for life, easily available & normally (especially this time of year) on offer for pretty good money.

Personally I have no experience of Toptul, but with a name like that I would expect them to be sold by a company called "Happy Smiley Tool Co" in China.

I am probably completely wrong but, a name like that wouldn't get my attention for the right reasons.

Hi
Thanks for the reply, ive always been a bit dubious of Halfords products in the past. Having said that, its been a good few years since ive even stepped into halfords store. Perhaps its time to give them another try.

A local parts shop to me has a range of the Toptul sockets sets on display, which is why i was tempted by them initially, they seemed like a decent piece of kit. I will check out the halfords offerings and compare before deciding.
Cheers

I have! I abused a too small ratchet on too tight a nut and broke it.

"No probs, Sir! I'll get you a new one from the cabinet!"

I still have some of the Draper sockets from a set my Dad bought me in about 1980, I added to them and I have been in the motor trade using them since. 35 years. The original ratchet head snapped many years ago but I will have been putting high loads on it.

The socket type? Both have there place imo, It's nice to have some six sided but to use them all the time is a pain in the bum haha, good for ageing fixings, before rounding them use the six sided socket, otherwise the multi is best for me personally, they're designed to be a flank drive these days, initially used by Snap On I believe, but they all copy each other in some way.

Get the best version of Draper if you want, Halfords advanced have a lifetime no quibble guarantee, so for your first set this could be good value too?

I saw some online the other day from Halfords that looked pretty good, bigger than usual sizes, good range, many only include pretty small or miss sizes you want, and give you loads of generally useless tiny bits and pieces haha, anyway take your time to find a set with a good range of 1/2" & 3/8" sizes.

Checked out the halfords range tonight & decided to go with toptul instead, perhaps a bit of a gamble, but the ratchet (to me) just seemed to fit my hand better. i suppose its a personal choice thing as much as anything else. Also managed to find a better deal online :

Will give it a good once over when it arrives and report back.
