I'm sure some of the things from cars are transferrable? Sorry if this is blasphemy to make these threads on a car forum but I will be a car man too soon when I get a Mazda 3 soon smile...

See the vid : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE8eLzGDaOc&fe...

what is this "rotor" (blue thing in diagram of video)? Is it the flywheel?
At 0:33 The narrator said: "TCI functions begin when the ignition switch is activated which supplies current from the battery to the
TCI unit..."

Confused by that comment.
This rotor cannot be spinning simply by turning on the ignition surely? I don't sense that there's
anything at all moving inside the engine when the ignition is on.. does he mean starter? Note on a motorcycle there is a starter key. and a separate push to make switch to act as starter unlike a car where you turn the key further clockwise from ignition position to start it and then let go once start

So... if he does mean ignition and not starter:
Does this mean if I turn the ignition key to the on position but do not press the starter switch (or in a car just simply turn on ignition only) the spark
plug is still firing at regular intervals but nothing is happening since the starter motor hasn't turned?
just sparks firing but no combustion?

No, the spark plug is not sparking when turning the ignition on, the video does show that the spark plug is sparking once the engine is turning, there is the possibility of a single spark occuring when turning the ignition and powering up the circuit but that single spark is not enough to start the engine
You need to look at that video again

The TCI is the ignition ECU as we car guys would call it.

Nothing is turning until you press the starter button.

There is no spark until the rotor turns the pick up passes the inductor firing the TCI, it is explained pretty well in the video for me.
