Hello

I am having an odd issue with my 2009 Honda Civic Type R. I have ice cold air conditioning out of the passenger side door and central vent, but only warm air out of the driver's side door and central vent - no matter what temperature I set it too, and where I set it auto or manual. The drivers side never gets above warm even on max fan speed and the highest temperature. The passenger side is never anything other than ice cold.

This was all at idle after letting it heat up (I haven't had a chance to drive - I thought I had no ac or heat altogether initially, though that was because my central vents weren't working - fixed by replacing the blower motor - well, the right blower motor ... I had replaced the wrong one last week! ).

Any ideas?

My coolant is to the top of the radiator and seems green and watery like it should be. I fitted a new cabin air filter recently and checked it was in the right way. It is slightly damp (it has been very wet here recently) and had a small pink mark on it (blue filter - coolant leak?).

Cheers

Things to check for

Blockage in air duct
Loose/missing/knocked off air duct
Stuck flap
Broken flap mechanism
Faulty flap motor
Burnt wiring controlling flap motor

If you have proper diagnostic software, you can cycle all the flaps individually and listen to see what’s working.

Just a thought - there appears to be two heater flap motors. I bought a replacement, the part number of which is very close but doesn't quite match either. I fitted it onto one side where it didn't quite fit but managed to screw it in (it connected fine) but it didnt' fix the issue. I realised the passenger's side also has one and so plugged the one I had taken off into that side - central vents now work, but the issue with the heat.

Think it could be possible that the motors are for specific sides i.e. if I swap them around, it might work?

I'll try that tonight, but it doesn't look like the passenger's side one is that easy to get out.

I can’t answer that question because I’ve never worked on that model before, only newer ones but I would imagine there will be numbers on them and I appreciate it will be a real pain in the ass to remove them to check.

Also when fitting, it’s not as simple as just sticking them on. You’ll need to calibrate them first but it’s not difficult. Before you attach the motor to the heater unit, you need to plug it into the wiring loom and set the controls to the closed position, then manually close the flap, then you can attach the motor to the heater unit.

I had exactly this in a Merc S class (therefore this may be irrelevant!!!), hot one side, cold the other, there was a “duo valve” that was a dual servo controlled water mixing valve, one of the servo’s gave up so it was new valve time, £120 valve and about an hour to fit it.

Might help.....might not :-)

Aha. This may be the root source of all my problems!

I did wonder if perhaps an alternator was causing issues, as I also have a whirring noise when my windscreen heater is on, and have occasionaly had flickering dash lights?

Okay, I need to hold my hands up. I'm a moron.

Remember the heater flap motor I said I replaced?

Well, as noted above, I initially installed it on the wrong side. I.e. replaced a working one. I then re-installed it on the other side to no avail.

However, turns out I didn't install it at all. All I did was plug it in. I.e. the plastic arms that actually adjust the flaps? Not attached. In fact, in the working one I had initially taken off, I snapped the arms removing it. The new one I had installed? I had removed the arms at it didn't fit/

laugh

I feel suitably embarrassed. I can't seem to get the passenger side one off without removing the glovebox. Job for another day.
