Fitted a steering rack to my Megane and i have a feeling i haven't centralised the steering rack properly, as my steering wheel turns 1 and a half turns to the left, about 1 and a quarter to the right then the esp/asr/abs light triggers.
So, i'm going to disconnect the steering column u-joint, then after disconnecting tie rods im going to count the amount of turns the pinion shaft turns from left to right, then half it!
Now, here's the thing i'm unsure of, when the steering is disconnected, does the steering wheel have to be central too(maybe confuse electronics?) Or doesn't that matter, im thinking it won't matter?

Firstly centralise the rack

Then check if the s wheel is aligned, if not remove and refit - this needs to be done so you indicators cancel correctly

Then check the tracking is correct, minor adjustments can be done vis track rod ends

You may also have damaged the clock spring if the wheel travels too far in one direction.

Just disconnected rack again today, counted the complete turns on the rack pinion from side to side, then halved that amount so rack was central, also meaured rack ends at each side to a fixed point(like i did originally), bloody warning light is still coming on full lock to the right??
I was worried about the clock spring but horn, airbag, radio controls etc on the steering wheel are all fine.
Abs/asr/esp warning doesn't come on at any other time while driving, just full lock right?

What megane is it? Some have a steering angle sensor. It's like a spirit level underneath the airbag

This is turning into a bloody nightmare, first time my diy skills have bitten me in the arse! :-)
Was intending to get steering angle sensor set at local French car specialist, so went to get tracking done locally in preperation.
They told me they ran out of adjustment on one track rod end? So instantly thought rack was not centralised and was needing set more over to that side, done that now airbag squib thing is knackered!
I can see in the gap between the back of the steering wheel and the column shroud the white tape material, bugger!!
Never thought putting on a steering rack would be this difficult, steering rack was completely central, done it twice! Just don't understand how steering went slightly more one way than tother?
Anyway, booked in to get new Renault airbag squib/indicator light stalk unit fitted and to get steering angle sensor set, what a balls up! :-)
