I do all my spannering at home on the driveway, or in the garage on my motorbikes.

One of my pet hates about this time of year is the cold and getting dark early, both impede my spannering time. Should my Euromillions numbers ever come up then the must-have for my obscenely large mansion will be a large heated garage where I can tinker to my heart’s content.

I used to live in a terrace and work on my car in the street in the 90’s, as others have said it is remarkably sociable. Old boys would always stop to chat about ‘they don’t make ‘em like they used to, it’s all computers these days’.

An easy way to tell if your local council allows oil changes at the roadside is to look for the oil drain grates.

If there's one, just position the sump plug above it, and saves any mess

James,
I fear its people like you who get home mechanics a bad name.

Collect the old oil in a bucket, or any of the products deisgned for it, put it in the cant hat you have just drained of new oil into your cars sump, screw the top up tight and take it to the Corporation Tip - sorry, Waste Recycling Center!

Or, like me, have a 25L drum, that I collect old oil in so I don't neeed to go to the tip very often.
