Has my car got a transponder key?

Cannot find the spare key, Mazda 6 TS from 2004. The key I have does have a black plastic cover but it is quite small. Aside from breaking it open, is there any way I can check if this is a transponder key?

What is the best (cheapest) way to get a replacement/spare key?

Yes it should have one, remove the plastic column switch cowl and you should see one of these fitted around the ignition switch
