(And yes I know it needs priming)

Hello fellow home spannerers. I am having a bit of a problem with my 2004 V70 D5. I have just changed the paper fuel filter and I have sat cycling the ignition (it’s ignition primed) at least 20 times yet it still will not start.

The facts are thus:
- the housing definitely fills with fuel so it’s not a pump issue
- there was a film of diesel on the exit hole of the filter itself so I’m assuming the fuel is getting through it ok
- I have just under 1/4 of a tank left

Any ideas?? My current thinking is I either need to: keep cycling the ignition and therefore priming the pump, or I need to put some more fuel in the tank before trying again (not sure why this would be needed however).

The rear of the car is under my parents’ car port but the front is not so every time I get in it to cycle the ignition I get soaked (why is it raining this much in August?!) I am cold, wet and stink of diesel and getting a little bit hacked off. I would like to depart my parents’ driveway at some point tonight!

I have had a nice warm shower and have a change of clothes and am going to put my feet up for a bit but if you have any ideas at all (apart from laughing at my misfortune/incompetence) please do share them.

I have a hunch that there could be an air-lock somewhere

Are you able to bleed the diesel through at the injectors or close to them to clear any possible air-lock

You were correct, injectors bled and it started, kept the revs up for 10-15 secs and then it idled away happily so all is well in Volvo land.

I am wondering whether there is a fault with the low pressure pump though, as it’s supposed to be self bleeding...
