Bought a Forester STI recently and it's been a great all round car until now.

Come to start the car and get one cough and then nothing. No amount of cranking will result in another fire.
Wait, try again, same thing. Car has so far always managed to start if I keep persevering with this method. Say half a dozen times. Car then fires up fine and idles normally.

Any ideas?

Hard to tell in isolation, but having just started my MR2 it sounds much stronger. Could just be the battery.

Fuel pressure regulator? I've not had any issues in either of my Subarus, but it seems to be a fairly common issue with the 2.5 turbo engines.

Try holding down the throttle slightly, I had an issue with my newage where the idle valve had gunked up and wouldn't start without a slight press of the throttle.

What condition are the spark plugs in? If fouled then they can also prevent cold starts, also try disconnecting the maf and see if it makes a difference, it's a common fault finding step for cranking no start issues.

I had a Subaru Legacy with the EJ20 engine with a similar issue. Although mine would cut out after it started. Turned out to be the crank sensor.

They're about £20 on Autodoc, but they're an absolute bh to get out.
