I stopped fussing about with ramps and axle stands, and went to Quick Jacks, about the best I can get for a residential garage and able to be stored pretty compactly.

Or this in residential garage...

The solution for slipping ramps is ratchet straps.

Attach straps to ramps, lay strap out on drive, so you drive over it as you drive up the ramps... so long as the strap is long enough to reach the opposite end wheels, you're sorted.

Very true, for a small budget I think the metal ramps with some extenders has been absolutely fine. It's safe once chocked & I put a big breeze block behind to stop slipping but equally the rope/rachet strap idea would work too.

Of course if I had the money those mini ramps would be good but for now I'll be sticking with the ramps.

Keep posting however, I imagine this is something a lot of people deal with

With all this buying of ramps and jacks and stands and death by squashing and stuff, wouldn't it be easier to take it to your friendly neighbourhood garage?

If you look at a single task in isolation then yes. If you use them more than that no.
