Anything I should be aware of before changing the sump?
2002 1.9 Tdi, I think asz engine, it’s had a meeting with a speed bump and cracked the sump.
Would any of you know what type of gasket they use, paper or rubber.
This has a oil level built in.

It's much easier (and cleaner) with the engine out. smile

Access is probably your biggest issue. Really look at it and assess what needs to come off to get the sump undone and out without it being too much of a Chinese puzzle past the subframe and lift pipe. (exhaust, front diff and steering rack from my adventure, not on a Golf though)

It will drip oil on you, constantly. Clean and clean, drip in your eye, then your mouth.

Depending on your sump style and gasketing it can be a bugger to cleanly fit the new one. Managing sump plus gasket plus RTV lifted above your head, Chinese puzzled past the subframe while suddenly oil in your eye again.

Tips from my attempt which was flat faced tin sump onto flat faced block. Use RTV to fix gasket to sump(don't let it cure needs to still be soft during fitting). Put short lengths of stud (cheap threaded rod cut to length, throw away items) in some of the sump bolt holes. These act as location/guide pins. They'll help you line up the sump and gasket before the RTV or gasket has the chance to stick to the bottom of the engine in an unwelcome alignment. They also allow you to hold it in place with one hand without it shifting while the other hand fishes for those vital first bolts.

If you can rent a garage space with a lift it will make the whole process a lot easier and more pleasant. Also make sure you've got the tools you need. My experience of VW is limited but it involved lots of swearing about what kind of idiot thought spline drives were an improvement on the trusty hexagonal fixings we're all used to and equipped for.

There are two really awkward to reach studs at the gearbox end that are also quite difficult to see. Use one of these long reach, ball-ended Allen keys to get them out. The sump is stuck on with a liquid gasket and needs gently prized off so you really have to make sure you've got all the studs out first before you start applying force (ask me how I know ). Check the stud positions on the new one to make sure you've found all the studs on the old one.
I live up a half mile bumpy farm track and my wife's Golf had 5 new sumps in her 4 years of ownership. They are pretty fragile for "offroading".
I also had to replace the turbo twice when she cracked the sump and didn't notice for a couple of minutes, they really don't like running without oil for very long.

Thanks, after posting I thought it was a bit daft to ask as it looked a simple straight forward task, glad I did now.
Might put it off till the weather warms up a bit, or get the local mobile to pop round.
