If the headlight wasn't designed for HIDs or LEDs then technically it's an automatic MOT fail. It's because the headlight isn't designed to focus the beams in the right way. So have have reflectors or projector type headlights?

I've converted cars to run HID and LED but on both occasions, the headlight was designed for their use (one they were optional in later years the other customer headlights).
If the car never had these as an option, you'll get much better performance from an uprated halogen bulb. As above go for something name-brand.
