Any recommendations for a fairly cheap diagnostic scanner that also shows stored/old codes? I currently use a cheapo ELM327 adapter that has poor connection along with the ‘Car Scanner’ app on my iphone. It only shows current active fault codes.

Rosstech - although not cheap if you want to do stuff with it.

Otherwise any budget Autel machine, they don't tend to date fault codes and anything historic could be from 2016 or yesterday. I wouldn't be too concerned as you would normally start with code scan, clear, drive and then rescan

Thanks, I’ve considered VCDS in the past but I have no interest in coding or enabling hidden features etc so dont think it’s worth it.

There’s a lot of Autel diag machines, is there a specific budget one you could point out?

Carista or OBDEleven seem popular with VAG owners that don't want to pay for VCDS.
