Serious question - has anybody heard of axle stands failing when used within correct load and positioning requirements?

Rock solid. Though I still put heel ( if removed) under the sills as an extra safeguard. Just in case.
You remove part of your foot & put it under the sill?

wink

Most stands will be made by the same manufacturer and branded Sealey, Halfords or whatever..... it's the same with jacks, I had a snap on,it was identical to a Sealey, except for the price obviously.

Ratchet stands are obviously easier to deploy since you don't need to mess around with lining holes up and installing the pin. But you need to be careful because some poor quality ones don't ratchet reliably which can lead to them collapsing under load.
What! Is there some evidence of these stands collapsing under load?

Someone who manufactures or sells stands that collapse are going to be in prison pretty quick!

I've bought several Halfords advanced range of products and I think they're great. Good quality and reasonable price.

Bit late to the party but I'd have another set of Halfords orange if I were you - I have 4x of them and very happy, if they crack I'll just have another set at the money.

I've used ratchet stands in the past, but after a year or so of use I found that any shift in the weight while jacking up the car often let the ratchet self-release, with poo-inducing results. Now I'll only use pinned stands.

There was a big issue with Harbor Freight in the US selling dodgy axle stands: https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/consumer-advi...
