That happened to me once, but fortunately I was driving a little FL6 puddle jumper and the exhaust brake wasnt particularly effective.

On an FM12 itd have been a day-ender.

The 3 position switch is as follows :
exhaust brake off ( mid normal position )
exhaust brake on when you come off throttle(tab up )
exhaust brake on with footbrake operation (tab down )
