My buddy races in the European truck racing championships.

Some of those trucks are just silly fast.

Years ago I had a summer job cleaning refrigerated trailers and maintaining forklifts at a local haulage firm. One of the blokes I worked with was a driver who'd lost his HGV licence for some reason but still did some shunting around the yard.

I'd asked him the very same thing: just how quick are these things without that trailer holding them back? They'd just had a few then-brand-spanking (03 plate) DAF CFs delivered. 380 hp versions, I think, or maybe 430s? This chap fired one up and took me for a drive up and down the yard. I remember being very impressed at just how quickly the thing picked up when given full beans through the gears - the guy reckoned some of the beefier versions were about as quick as a 1990s 911 which seemed far fetched, but with the 800hp versions about these days I could well believe it.

(I also got to have a few goes driving them round the yard while I worked there, up to this point I'd not driven anything bigger than a Transit but other than getting used to the width the DAFs were unbelievably easy to drive. Made my Punto feel comically sluggish! Well impressed with the air-assisted clutch and gearshift, and probably the comfiest seat I've ever sat in too.)

They can be quite nippy, the problem is the amount of gear changes and getting all that power on to the road
But if you hit the right gear and get some good traction you can suprise a few people!

From a standing start you'll be wanting an Eaton Twinsplitter to realy go for it smile I miss the good old days before limiters and traction control. driving

Running one of our 460 Volvos solo it will start in 6th, jump to 9th then 11 then 12.

The modern boxes are so good you're not really wasting time going through loads of gears. They're only there for the weight.

If auto boxes were as quick as a twinsplitter I wouldn't mind them. As it is, I'll take a manual gearbox everytime thanks. biggrin

I have driven Peterbilts with 430hp 60 Series Detroits and Alison autos. They had a very light aluminium grain bodies and weighed bugger all empty, hardly any more than a tractor unit. They would shift, but are still relatively heavy and have huge amounts of drag. They felt quick for a truck, but in reality a decent Micra would leave them standing.
