My ideas do appear to be over engineered. scratchchin

Just a little update. I couldn't find the switch in my shed. I'm sure it's there somewhere but...

Anyway, I new super secret button is in place and the van starts first time every time. smile

Back to work tomorrow so expect little progress and more MS Painting. wink

The problem with marine ply, is that it is st and you will end up doing it again after a year biggrin

Honestly, it doesn't handle it well because the weight of the cars pushes down between the metal struts going across and it ends up just cracking and falling apart. You also end up sticking roof felt in places to try and get some grip or you have to use the winch all of the time.

Following up Frank's idea...

...tail drop would be easy to fabricate but would add weight, restrict my rear view and clang about.

Maybe ramps could do it instead. smile

why not use heavy duty mesh type stuff ,the stiff stuff about 3mm thick, its fairly light for its strength and can be welded in place and is pretty good for grip.

As part of my Swizz army knife on wheels idea I've taken a couple of photo's of my mates bike trailer...

...much simpler than the idea I had for mounting bikes to the bed. Guess I'll be borrowing a pipe bender at some point. wink

As I was woken up early by one of nephews deciding to unleash their dog in the house I thought I'd get tomorrows job done today. smile

Cut and capped the end of the chassis.

Cut with a diamond disk, tidied with a grinding disc, a couple of bits of old trailer chassis rail cut, trimmed and trail fitted before arc welding into place. My MIG was out of gas and I prefer the smell of an arc weld anyway. wink

I also have some off cuts...

...to cut and patch the holes in the rest of the chassis later. smile

you know you can change the wire in the mig welder to weld ally plate to the chassis ?

Weld Aluminium to Steel? silly

That would be brittle and about as much as use as explaining Quantum Physics to Brittany Spears.

The two worse bits of the chassis today.

A bit of plate that is actually a spacer for motorway armco. smile

Ground a V-butt.

Cut out the rust...

...Vee the outer edge and...

...MMA weld the plate in place and grind the edges tidy.

Repeat on the other side...

The rest is cosmetic rather than structural so I'll use my mig when I get more gas. wink

That fence was finished, blown down, rebuilt and has razor wire along the top now. The Lawn Mower was thanks to the BLMRA throwing the gauntlet at the PPC Forum. I'm dedicating today to my racing Panda. The £999 Challenge is only four paydays away. yikes

Something I have noticed...

...these tails are a fair bit longer than the one I designed.

This is mostly due to the length of my driveway but if I hinge the beaver tail so it can lay flat on the top when parked I could get away with...

...a longer tail myself. Just undo the lower bolts and lift it using the winch. scratchchin

I am far from being isaac newton, but how will a winch lower that? hehe
I think you're over complicating things, just make it as long as the longest wheelbase car you're going to stick on it. Everyone else makes them as long as possible to make them versatile, you're just using it for you and your mates.

I guess having a big beaver hasn't been advantageous since the early 80's Ron Jeremy scene. hehe
