As with anything using chains, they are okay as long as you are driving on snow. When you get to a clear roads the chains should come off again. Then if you get to an untreared road on they go again. It would not be feasible in this country as there is not enough snow.
OP did you get the idea from Ice Road Truckers? They have a totally different scenario over there.

Edited to fix mistakes.

Perhaps people need to learn how to mantain their vehicles correctly as well?!

I've seen trucks happily driving along in deep snow and ice at 40mph but then coming up behind a car driver doing 15mph. That's when they get stuck.

Take all vehicles off the road, apart from professionals - van drivers, taxis, reps - and then the trucks won't get stuck.

Get rid of these auto gearbox contraptions and start fitting diff locks again. I've not had my auto stuck but they are crap in snow and ice and I'd lay money on the fact that the three stuck trucks I passed on Bowes incline on the A66 in the snow 7 days ago were autos.

Check my recent thread about a datsun cherry turbo i just BOUGHT, had to take it home, not gonna buy some linglongs just for a drive home.

Think im changing the alloys so the tyre would be wasted if i bought something decent.

Not needed for the driving god nor is it posible due to the 90 degree bend at the bottom with a nice big strainer post on the outside of the bend

Yes, my one holds it for a minute then reverts back to automatic so you have to keep an eye on the display to stop it. Tbh the electronic difflock traction control cobblers on it isnt too bad either, I can light up both wheels and leave number 11s on tarmac, I have driven some crap ones that just flash a light on the dashboard and do fk all though.

My experience is more old-school with tacho charts, diff locks and cross locks that 'thunk' and manual range changes... biggrin

yes I did my time in old manual FHs and would want things that clonk if I was doing more dodgy terrain, but this automatic electronic everything is a doss day to day now and is perfect for the usual stuff.

Axle configuration also makes a lot of difference.

The law states we have to have a certain axle layout for different weights, 6x2 is the norm for 44t. This makes for maximum manoeuvrability and usually allows the mid axle to be lifted to improve tyre life and fuel economy.

Move to Norway where 6x4 is common and snow most of the year you wont find them getting stuck on a bit of slush.

Example, 6x2 tractor being towed up a snow covered hill by a 6x4 wrecker

If you don't have a lift axle then some of the weight is taken off the drive axle leading to you getting stuck. The comment above about auto boxes and diff locks also make a lot of sense.

No reason for them not to have winter tyres - they all use remoulds anyway so it's not like it would be a massive expense. I think winter tyres should be compulsory for all public service vehicles - emergency services, buses and essential logistics (food + fuel delivery).

Don't be daft, "not expensive", go and price up 16 truck tyres (6 supersingles,
10 normal width for the tractor unit) and come back and tell me how much they are, oh, I don't "use remoulds" at all so price up new ones.

Then we can work out how long it will take to pay for them.

Another thing, I work in Cornwall, we don't get snow here so we have never needed to worry about traction unless we go further afield, but then we are mostly on motorways anyway.
