Funny as i read an article on the big new cgm boats after i'd seen 1 in at Southampton and the article used Canary Wharf as a comparison.
It is pretty mad when you think about it, i was also surprised to read that the boat has a crew of just 37 people!!! Have to admit i wouldn't mind going to have a nose around 1 of these boats.

Our vehicles are double maned, 24 hours a day 5 days a week. My one does about 150,000km a year judging on its current mileage and how long we've had it. Service intervals depend on what you're using the vehicle for, my one runs constantly as it runs an air compressor for the powder tank that I drag about so it gets an oil and filter change every 2 months. When we bought the first one from renault they didn't change the service interval from their standard and we munched an engine in a year, the oil looked like black glue when they took it out
My previous Scania went around the clock before we moved it on, a million kilometers. Still running fine on the same engine, gearbox and diff, it was everything else that was falling apart

All our trucks 18t and 7.5 t are leased /hired and are chopped in at about 3yr old by which time they have averaged about 450,000 kms , mainly around Europe .
Serviced and inspected very regularly, they all run winter tyres from the end of summer as they could be going to Scandinavian countries at short notice , they also carry snow chains .
The hire company don't like paying out for repairs in foreign countries

My 12T is 5.5 years old and done 237,000 KMs due to only driven for 1 shift and also doesn't do
long distance either.
Servicing...no idea...it goes to the Daf dealer every 6 or 8 weeks for overnight "services".
No idea what they actually do,we're never told on a "need to now " basis.
It's how my manager works because HE is in charge and it's none of anybody elses business.

That will be the 6 or 8 weekly checks, we do ours in house and they are like an MOT, very thorough and are designed to spot faults before they become safety critical.
When you are doing the mileage some trucks do an annual MOT is not good enough to ensure its safe all the time.
I am quite excited, we are about to buy a new brake tester so we can do brake tests every 8 weeks.

Just a little thing I wondered - I know that when tyres are fitted to a wheel, it then goes on a balancing machine whose axle fits though the wheel centre.
How the hell does one balance the tyres on one of those old fashioned truck rims, where literally only the rim comes off from the spoked hub?

A couple of questions for you fellas.
With the new CPC laws how long do you think it would take to do test and cpc. The driving part shouldnt be a problem. Does 2 weeks sound about right + another week if i then did class 1 ?
Im in the North West - What sort of hourly rate would i be looking at for class 2 work ?
How difficult is it to get a job when you first start out ?

Getting a licence will differ for each person, the same as getting a car licence. I got my class 2 after an hour driving the test route, it's only a big van after all and the test isn't all that hard. Unless it has changed it is just one set reversing maneuver and drive around for 45 minutes without hitting a kerb or running anyone over. Class 1 took me a couple of weeks and two attempts, it also took me two attempts to pass the theory because I screwed up that clicky awareness computer thing. The going rate for getting the cpc card down here without actually turning up for any lessons is £400, or you could spend a week sitting in a classroom watching films on your phone.
I have no idea what the work is like up North, I live in lorry driver central (J30 of the M25) and can think of a couple places that would definitely take you on straight away with a class 1 fresh from your test, which isn't all that good considering that there are about 100 haulage firms here.
