Very true!

They understand merge in turn. They also understand lane discipline and they also understand that if you are tailgated, tapping your brake pedal is potentially very dangerous, much better to slow down and allow an overtake.

Yes, though I'd venture lane discipline is actually better (well, on the M6) than it used to be.

Lane discipline on the M6 from Birmingham to Manchester is atrocious, probably some of the worst in the Uk

I'm sure you've driven every motorway in the UK, whereas I've just driven the M6 for the last 30 years. It's busier, but when you can see tarmac generally it's better.

Couple of weeks ago I was able to go from Holmes Chapel to Sandbach in Lane 1 passing traffic in Lane 2 and 3.

I drive around a lot as my business covers the entire UK, but the M6 is the main route from home to my office in Cheshire

It might be because you don't get the wker brigade who think Merge In Turn = "overtake as many cars as possible and then swerve in at the last minute" in L1
Possibly, but this is only necessitated by the numpty brigade that clear them a path by merging too early.

Either way, it works!

Rule 268

Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

If I join and stay in lane 1 but can at 70mph pass lines of traffic in lanes 2 and 3, I am acting as per the above. The traffic in lanes 2 and 3 should be moving to the left as soon as it is clear. They are not doing this.
