My old Boss was a tight wad, but he went through the whole charade of making each of us leave our vans in the yard for a day, and then mentioned that a Tracker had now been fitted......

It hadnt, but we didnt know that......

I've noticed it varies in sensitivity but honestly doesn't bother me. Nudge nudge!

I did laugh the other day was in a spare van, don't have Lightfoot, smashed it through an NSL section only to realise they did fit one just not in the usual place

Does this count as taking the piss with a works van? Stick mattress and snowboard in the back, drive it to the Alps, film yourself doing doughnuts on a frozen car park until van slides into the Isere river next to the car park? I think that's a "yes". Former colleague of wife doing film distribution for Disney. What a tool.

Where I worked many years ago we allowed the delivery drivers to take the Van's home . The rule was to and from home only no private use .
I started to do mileage checks when I was made up to warehouse manager , this uncovered pretty substantial discrepancies , often several hundred miles each weekend and the cheeky hits were hitting the fuel on a Friday night and again on a monday morning.
We also discovered a pretty large theft system involving our three drivers and the goods in operative.
The big boss got the police involved and the 4 got arrested . On being searched wraps of drugs were found on two of them .
Upshot was prison time for all and later deportation for one that was here illegally.
A modern problem? No , this was 45 years ago .

We use Navman it’s brilliant for location helps us send nearest van to job etc, great for traffic diversion and it tracks everything including when vehicle starts so employee can’t argue in improper use.

As a TM I think having 11 vehicles and no trackers is bonkers. Even just from a liability point of view as a very very basic thing. When I started in the transport business I was baffled that we had no trackers, it was one of the first things I did when I took over. Drivers were being given job sheets and sent off into the wilds and might appear back 3 hours later, or 5 hours later... or whatever and we would have no idea where they had been or what they were doing.

This was 2007. A few of the older drivers were not happy, but as it turned out they were the ones who were doing the dodgey stuff and letting the side down.

As an absolute minimum I would be fitting trackers and just getting a view on how they are used, where they are going etc. Because at the moment you literally have no idea.

We use C Track. I have found them very good and once your kit is paid for you can drop down to data only. Their tracking kit is good and well fitted and the software is decent and plenty of reports you can run and of course you can set your own up etc. No affiliation just a happy customer last 12-13 years.

Longer term, once you have your trackers fitted you can start to look at maybe some cost savings. Because with 11 vehicles if you only saved a few pounds here and a few pounds there it could add up to thousands. And of course you need to look at recouping the costs of the tracking.

The other thing to mention, dash cameras. You only need them after you realise you needed them!! With 11 vehicles accidents will happen, its just a matter of time.

If you can, keep the vans on site, reduce milage, damage, fuel use, servicing, tyres, insurance claims and the all the hassle that comes with it.

They won't give a toss about your investment.

The fleet where I work comprises of about 70 vehicles, with about 60 of them tracked by Navman. The lads are also tracked by their company issued PDA's. Despite this I've had to haul one lad over the coals recently who thought it was acceptable to do as he pleased on his night shift which included going home for a kip and running his Mrs around like a taxi service in one of our company vehicles.

Teletrac Navman are shysters, I wouldn’t wish them on my worst enemy.

Great system when it works, but the most awful service and they tie you up in a contract so you can’t get rid of them even when the service is an absolute joke.

We had to run out the contract, 70 vehicles tracked, but about 15/20 not working at anytime throughout the whole three years.

Avoid like the plague.

Yes I would be inclined to agree but it wasn't me who signed the contract with them...

I signed the contract and spent most of the next 3 years regretting it, warranty was only for 12 months so every time their equipment failed (and it did, a lot) we had to stump up the de/re installs costs.

Just as I left that position I signed up with TrakM8, no idea how they are doing though.
