Glad the OP 'got away with it' - sure it spoilt the holiday but could've been a lot worse ad he says.
I'm well aware of the age issue as I worked in a reputable indie tyrebay as a school kid/student but its surprising how many people don't realise.
On a similar note, when inspecting our new (donated fixer-upper) caravan, one tyre was both 6 years old and just rated for cr use - don't forget to buy caravan/light commercial tyres with sufficient ply rating too!
It's not use that kills caravan tyres, it's standing unrotated on the same spot for months on end and to a lesser degree these days, the UV exposure that causes crazing in later life.
I'm lucky - one side of my motorhome is tight against a south facing wall so never gets any sun. On the exposed side I chuck a couple of old jackets over the tyres to shade them. That, and rolling it back and forth a couple of metres every couple of weeks, never stopping in the place, I hope will alleviate the problem.I'm well aware of the age issue as I worked in a reputable indie tyrebay as a school kid/student but its surprising how many people don't realise.

I have an older 'van and had it serviced a wee while after I bought it.
The mechanic said I should change the tyres as the ones that were on it were past their best. He is a bit of a 'blether' so I took what he said with a pinch of salt...
...Until I saw the aftermath of a blowout on a motorway shrtly afterwards. No injuries or fatalities but the mess of the 'van because of the delaminating tyre was spectacular.
Got the tyres changed the day after.

My caravan always sits on my drive with the near side facing the sun. The tyre on this side always ages more than the one that is permanently in shadow on the other side. I have to replace the one in the sun much more frequently than the one in the shade.
