I have a multifuel Coleman and a hurricane lamp.

The Coleman puts out a lot more light, but it is far more complex what with mantles and valves and pumps and whatnot. The hurricane lamp is simplicity itself and is a lot friendlier.

It's all horses for courses isn't it? For quick lighting, like needing a pee, I will have a torch for that. I'm thinking of longer periods; power cuts (perhaps inside my house, which doesn't happen too often to be honest), or like I was at the weekend, marshalling in the middle of a field for a local Scouts/Guides' night-hike until 1am.

The Campingaz lamps look good for the money but need gas, whereas the Colemans can be fuelled by petrol if needs be - at the cost of simplicity. Tilleys are paraffin only if I'm correct. Looking at chrisga's pictures I'd rather go for a Tilley (is that a Kindle there? I will need to be able to read one of those with it) than a hurricane.

I think the Tilley is the way to go. Thanks all smile

ETA, I just realised it isn't a kindle, it's the instructions to the camping stove, hah!

My wife does read her kindle with the Tilley so you should be ok.

You will be happy with a genuine Tilley purchase. Ours was my fathers and has seen a lot of action. Occasionally clean the glass (only gets sooty if you are impatient and try to open the valve too early on start up). Can't remember the last time the mantle was changed. Top tip though, if storing for a while leave some paraffin in the lamp as our plunger seals dried up when we failed to do so and wouldn't hold any pressure until they were changed.

As others said though, all Tilley spares should be available but not necessarily from all camping shops.
