More meddling from Eurocrats, this time the propose the introduction of an MOT for caravans. I had heard about this particular bit of nonsense a year or two ago, now its raised its ugly head once again. Unfortunately it has passed stage one and headed for stage two, despite our Euro M.P'S objections to the proposal. Should it pass stage two it only remains to implement yet more manic legislation.

Good, bad or indifferent?

I don't know about the MOT but a caravan tax would be good as it may get a few off the road come bank holiday weekends when your stuck in mile long line of traffic doing 20 mph because of the things.

if it highlights safety issues and delivers value without being so prescriptive that all vans over 3 years old become scrap I don't think it would be a bad thing.

Are caravans and trailers registered in any way?

Not to my knowledge so I can't really see how they are going to enforce this.

it's like anything, it's the people who don't have any sense that spoil it for the sensible people.

most people i would imagine would like to keep their family safe and get their caravan serviced and kept safe, but there are always the few, and the government have to make sure we are all safe(and poor)

My thoughts from last time!

I drag an old (circa 14 years old) 'van to race tracks around the country. Always check and double check tyres, pressures, hitch and lighting before setting off without fail, caravan itself looks a little scruffy on the outside but its clean and safe, which is more important! The thought of something happening after not checking makes my stomach churn. I also drive at the speed limit at all times to avoid upsetting road users wherever possible and set off at times when I will inconvenience the least number of people.

Trouble is a couple of times I have been stuck behind someone dragging one with a Golf clearly struggling as their car does not have the presense to drag something like that and they are pootling along at 30mph, its embaressing so rather than make people sit in a queue behind two slow moving vans and having people hurl abuse at me and try dangerous overtakes I pull off the road and let everyone by for 20 minutes or so then crack on again.

It's a tricky balance but by using my brain I rarely upset anyone, it's all about considering your fellow petrol heads/motorists!

I support an annual check for Carvans and trailers but I think something also needs to be done about the cars used for towing. Sure a Golf or something has the require plating for a Caravan but is it suitable? Not really!

I've seen more caravans and trailers at the side of the road with collapsed suspension, burnt out bearings and ancient tyres that have exploded than I've ever seen cars in similar states

You forgot to add in all the ones lay on their sides holding every one up because some incompetent knobber upended it.

I'd imagine most of their caravans are extremely well maintained as they form part of their way of life and stakes are so much higher...

I find that my combo would be in the odd situation of my car (1928 vintage) not requiring an MOT, yet my caravan (1929 Eccles) would require an MOT!
Yes we need lots more H&S because none of us are, apparently, able to use common sense.

I've edited that for you.
Eccles wouldn't need an MOT if the same rules as for cars and trucks are applied.

In crash investigations involving caravans, is the condition of the brakes, tyres and suspension a significant factor ?

Or is it bad driving, overloading, poor weight distribution, and other road users ?

I'm guessing that statistically accidents will not be reduced by much.
