Does anyone use a hammock on long overnight backpacking hikes? I have hammock+tarp+bugnet+underblanket, but it's much bulkier and heavier than a backpacking tent + thermarest, so doesn't come out as much as I'd like. I think the biggest issue is the sleeping bag and underblanket is almost like carrying 2 sleeping bags.. it's proper chunky, but necessary for warmth. I'd love to do long walks with hammock overnight. Should I just get a bigger rucksack and man up a bit, or does anyone have any tips?
I use a hammock without an underblanket and don't generally struggle with the cold. 3-season sleeping bag, decent thermals + another layer or two.Off for my first solo wild camp tonight, always usually go in a 2 or 3 but I've been itching for a solo trip for a while now and tonight is the night
Heading to a regular spot in some woods not far from Harrogate, going super simple so eating before I go and just taking some beers and snacks with me

Good night for it. I wonder if its the same wood I did a bushcraft course in? :-)Heading to a regular spot in some woods not far from Harrogate, going super simple so eating before I go and just taking some beers and snacks with me

Group of us did a week of hiking in North Wales and stayed out for the night a few weeks ago. This is prep for a 10 day exped in South America which coincides with my 40th next year. Midnight shots of rum round a gas cooker for tea was idea.
Want to go back and take my 11 year old son with me but not walk as far. Have a very squared away (para cord knoted at 5 inch intervals plus bungies on the corners for rapid deployment) MoD issue poncho and bivvi bag.
Looking at getting a tent for a bit more room and protection so I don't put him off. I've seen the usual light weight tents but am also considering a pyramid type with or without the inner depending on the weather. Seems like they have the most room per £ and kg.
Anyone else use similar?

How do you get on with the Phoxx II?
It’s on my list but they go up inner 1st don’t they?
My Bedrock cost £30 & though big pack size & pretty heavy, does the job. Is it worth spending a lot more to get something a bit better …?
My apologies meant to reply to this ages ago but kept forgetting, once pitched the Phoxx is a belter of a tent, very roomy for me and my kit, haven't tried with the dog yet (I'll report back in 2 weeks on that one)It’s on my list but they go up inner 1st don’t they?

The only down side as you've pointed out is pitch inner first, in a downpour that's an absolute nightmare however for woodland camping which is my main fix its fine as I can sling a quick tarp up to cover me while pitching
Up a mountain however I'd be looking for a pitch all in one or outer first for obvious reasons
Not exactly compact but Christ this is brutal heat wise. Other half bought this Bonfire Solo Stove. We’re sat out at our mooring using it for the first time and Christ it’s hot! I’ve moved about two metres back. Came with a Mesa stove too which would be probably more suited to a wild camp.
It’s been a lovely sunny day, albeit -1.
My shins are on fire.

I’ve looked at the Solo stoves but I had concerns that they were marketing - and presentation - over form.
Good to see they aren’t so thank you for posting.
It was first time we’ve used it but will update over time. The heat was immense! Obviously it’s too large for stealth camping but travelling on the boat it will be great. Stood on bricks last night and no scorching to the ground. The smokeless side is a real benefit as no residing smell on clothes. Good to see they aren’t so thank you for posting.
