Where can you legally stay overnight in a camper?

I signed up mainly to say thanks for all the information on this subject and I've just ordered Britstops.
I converted a LWB Sprinter into a camper (minus windows) and used it during the week. At weekends I go home and responsibly set it up for the next week.
The van (which allows me to do a second job in IT from it) is a company asset allowing me to save much in accommodation, tax etc.
From studying a degree in psychology, nature lends much to good mental health. I changed my approach to life and became much happier in the 'less is more' world in which I live - and most of my living is mobile in the past 12 months.
I would willingly pay £5-£10 per night to the Forestry Commission to stay overnight responsibly and would even help free in the forest for 2 days a year for an annual 'overnight' license to help with the forests and get the best value from them.
I appreciate the "stopping overnight" rules, however, I find it prejudicial (like 1950's racism) to be "moved on". Currently, responsible people are denied the right to nature overnight at affordable prices. I do pitch up with the lorries most of the time and that's fine but I also heat it largely carbon neutrally (wood burning stove) but that smoke isn't appreciated by the local lorries whose cabs are at the height of my chimney. For me to be more socially acceptable I would have to install a diesel heater - which isn't as environmentally friendly (is it?).
I would also be interested in being part of a crowd-fund project which would buy up pieces of land to permit overnight use across the UK.

I used www.searchforsites.co.uk for two weeks around France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Works a treat but my wife doesn't like the more "wilder" camps so sometimes we had to go for second choice. I found she accepted "wilder" once when we arrived in daylight which also helped.
