I do a fair bit of towing with a Sante Fe (hot air balloon) smaller trailer, but similar weight. Fair bit of use across fields, and it has been great. Ultimately it doesn't have the off road capability of a Land Rover, but it is comfy on the road and has been reliable.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think Jag-ne had the answer I suspect is correct:- "no - because if anyone could be bothered to read beyond the headlines, if you are buying a Euro6/2016+ model you will be absolutely fine. The hysteria will die down in a few months and everything will go back to normal. there might be some small knocks on older Euro5 and earlier diesels in a few years time when the regulations take effect but i don't think it will be catastrophic and the cars will be at least 4-5 years old by then anyway so will be at a third of their list price anyway."

Regarding 335, thats not an option, I could buy it at end of lease but it would be 18 months old with only 18 months left on warranty.
Santa fe will be new with 5 years warranty.
Planning on stopping work early, so income will be reduced, so intention is to keep next car at least 5 years.
In addition santa fe has a lot more space, and will be cheaper to run.
Also has a full size spare wheel! And you can lock the diffs, which can be very useful for towing.

I do not think the current scare is anything more than politics and remain very unconvinced a modern diesel poses great health risks, especially as I am not going to be using in cities. Compared to Buses, lorries, vans etc, seems negligible. Would have thought constant slowing down for speed bumps, traffic calming measures and subsequent speeding up causes more pollution really.

Had looked at Outlander and read test report, but does not seem a viable option really, for reasons Coolcurly outlined.

So Santa fe it is then! (Will be keeping chipped 3.0tdi audi a4 cab for fun though!)

Santa Fe ordered, discount with their affinity scheme is huge!

Delivery 1st September.

Will miss the 335. But will probably have a lot less risk of getting a ticket!
