Looking for advice on a new head unit for a Cayman R i'm buying.....

Car currently has a crappy CDR 30 stereo with no DAB, no Nav, no BOSE and no Bluetooth etc. So i'm considering upgrading with a new double din head unit which I would like to include:
European sat-nav
DAB
Bluetooth facility for handsfree phone connection
Music connection for USB to ipod / iphone with lightning connector
Use with existing speakers
Ability to revert back to OE if necessary

I've not had any need to buy any ICE (think that's the word...!) for over 20 years so massively out of touch. I've spoken to a few retailers who talk Apple iplay, mirrored sat nav etc etc but its lost on me as i'm a complete technophobe! No interest in upgrading the speakers (would rather modify the exhaust!) so just want all the creature comforts I've enjoyed in previous cars and in my other cars.

All advice welcome, want to spend as little as possible to cover my basic needs (circa £500) and please go easy on me!

Hi Chris
Firstly they are a superb car you won’t be disappointed I have had one for a number of years and have a few more exotics but the R simply fights well above its weight and has a steering feel and balance that is right up there.

Plus I have enjoyed 4 years of ownership it hasn’t missed a beat and it is worth what I paid for it.

After consultation with the guru aka Steve at JZM who is superb I have done a standard upgrade in replacing the master cylinder on the brakes to a Gt3 unit since the feel was far too long on track and not precise plus I am running endless pads which were a shocking price but are a superb balance for road and track. I also have a half cage fitted for the track so my own Clubsport upgrade.

However the standard system head unit is poor and an upgrade here takes this part of the car forward years, I went for the full spec Alpine unit including Satnav and it is superb but was costly from memory £700 fitted that said they come in various levels and without Satnav I think gets it into your budget. The Apple car set up is also very good.

I would certainly recommend taking the plunge and by all means message me if can be of any help.

Thanks for your reply - your comments echo other R owners who appreciate its abilities.

911V are installing a Kenwood DNX-5170DABS unit for me prior to collecting. I sourced the unit and Tom is going to look after the install - we share (equally fussy) high standards! Unit offers Garmin nav, DAB Radio, Apple car play, blue-tooth, phone etc so all you would ever want! And its fully reversible if I ever wanted to sell the R and refit the OE unit.

Your mods sound good and i'll see how I get on with the brakes as I'm not typically hard on brakes for fast road use but appreciate if I track it the weaknesses will be quickly exposed.

Cheers, Chris

Anyone else done this? I’m half tempted to add an Apple car play unit as the CD-R30 is not good!
Anyone got pictures? Or done this with a Bose setup?

Hi Chris. Did your R have the Bose system?

No it didn’t, think it had Sound Plus but not BOSE. I have the head unit and facia surround etc.

If it doesn't have BOSE that's one less part (at around £100) that you have to buy - you will have a very straightforward swap. Maybe you'll need a different aerial connection if you're going DAB, I'm not sure about that. I had my stereo swapped out for an android auto/apple carplay unit. I bought all the parts on ebay pretty cheaply (fascia surround/metalwork/headunit/aerial adapter/optical converter) and had someone fit it - USB to the armrest box. Works pretty well.

My R is out of warranty later this year. I'm in two minds as to if I should extend it again. I'd like to make a few wee mods so maybe won't. If I don't a new headunit is on the cars. I'd want Android Auto and to replace the amp as the standard one I have (with Sound Plus) is very hissy (I believe they ass go this way with time). Has anyone any pics of their installs? I really don't think things that look too obviously aftermarket.

Hello - my local, but experienced ICE shop is quoting £500 for the back-end kit & fitting, on top of the unit I choose for my Cayman R, so it does feel like a big cost, just to get better Satnav & onscreen controls for music, which currently I plug in to headphone socket.

Just wondered if anyone has regretted doing it, or is it such a benefit & how many of the R’s have gone for the upgrade. They advise a £530 kenwood DMX8020 to get full wifi CarPlay/android auto. I have noted the advice on keeping the original DIN unit stored safely. Any advice on success stories, models & pricing thoughts? Many thanks
