Running through some woods on saturday I slipped in a muddy patch and fell onto a tree stump. This caught me on the lower ribs at the back and knocked the wind right out of me. I couldn't move for about a minute and then had to walk about a mile back home.
The pain wasn't too bad that night but next morning it was excruciating and it took me about 10 minutes to get out of bed. My wife took me to the minor injuries unit where I saw a nurse who said they don't X- Ray rib injuries and the only cure is time.
Now on Monday the pain is worse and every movement almost makes me yelp.
Anyone else had cracked ribs who can give some insight into how long recovery will be ?
I've never had pain like this before, it's a real bh.

Cracked ribs and a cold are a bad combination. Sneezing feels like it will destroy your ribcage.

I've broken ribs before; twice, they are a bugger and takes ages to heal as you can't strap them up and being where they are, they are constantly moving so take a lot longer to heal

I had poor sleep for a many weeks, maybe even a couple of months as whenever I rolled over I woke up with the pain, I also had to sit in a weird position when driving so as to minimise the pain and discomfort.

I can't remember the recovery time but it was a good couple of months for the pain to be "ok" and I would have twinges well into 6 months down the line.

Unfortunately there is really bugger all you can do about them, apart from pain killers and finding different positions to sleep or sit in, to lessen the pain.

The first time I broke one I lent over something at work awkwardly and caught the bottom rib on a shelf, It was an awkward angle and the shelf edge poked in and broke it, the second time was the same rib, I fell over whilst showing my daughter how to use her new clip on roller skate things.

Depends a lot upon the break, how old you are and how much care you take of them. How long is a piece of string?

You'll stop hurting so badly within a couple of days and will get a lot of the movement back within a fortnight. It'll be a couple of months before you are fully 'normal' again though.

Yep done it a few times in my football playing days... you should be ok moving around and sleeping normally by the end of the week, and then it will general get better over next month or so.
Take some painkillers to get you through the first few days.
If you need to cough hold a pillow next to your chest and brace yourself!!
Good luck - its a real pain!!!

Looks like I won't be running again for a couple of months. What a bummer.
I suppose I knew that, just wanted to share my pain and hear about other's experiences.
Just shows how suddenly these things can happen, one moment your'e running along quite happily, the next your on the deck, in agony.

I cracked a rib whilst snowboarding. Cleverly I carried on for another 2 days after doing it as it didn't hurt too much at the time, felt more like I'd pulled a muscle.

When I got back home and to work it was constant agony for about a month. Took around 4 months for it to feel like I could start doing things again. Went snowboarding again 10 months later and had a nasty landing and the damn thing started hurting again so I took it easy.

Just take it easy for a while and don't push it, if you can sit in a chair without being in agony then you're already doing better than I was. It did teach me that breaking bones in your 30s is less fun than when I broke a collar bone at 15, and that was pretty bad.
