We have been thinking about buying a campervan, T5/6 size but would like to hire one first.

Anyone hired one before? Any recommendations? I’m based on North Wales.

We’ve camped a few times and both really enjoy it, so no issues there but don’t want to spend a fair few quid without trying a camper or motor home first.

Nothing that cannot be driven on a normal car license.

N Wales based and heading up Scotland for 3-4 nights in mid Sept.

Adhire in Ellesmere port rent these out and they have always been really helpful with us when we have hired vans (not campers) You also have Snowdonia campers that rent these out.

Also have a look at Swift Motorhomes I think they hire and if you buy take the hire price off. It’s not cheap hiring!

A couple of years ago we did the same thing and hired from these guys: http://www.beaconscampers.com/

They may be a bit further away from you, but they were a cheaper than many others at the time. Our experience of them was very good.

It may be worth noting that when we did it, 3 families went - One that had a T5 Camper already, and 2 that did not. The outcome was that those with the camper decided to sell it (to one of the families that rented and loved it), and we ended up buying a Caravelle, as we loved the van, but decided the Caravelle (& a bell tent) was better for us. So for all of us, it was a very worthwhile exercise!

If you want to hire a proper one (i.e. a California, not an iffy conversion), speak to VW Van Centre in Liverpool. I think they offer a hire service for California’s. I’ve seen the Snowdonia Vans and a Cali is in a completely different league.

Wholeheartedly recommend Caledonian Campers in Glasgow. We hired from them on the way up to a highlands tour for our honeymoon a couple of years ago. The van was lovely, and they have us a great service at a good price - couldn’t have been more helpful.

Now I’ve been down the road of converting my own van, we opted to have them fit a rock’n’roll bed. Again, great service and well worth the trip.

All vw dealers will rent out their California demonstrators. We hired one 2 years ago for a 10 days in the highlands. Was £110 a day which included insurance gas and cutlery pots and pans.

There are several companies out there. I spent some time looking at this over the last few months, but kids are still quite young and that combined with the bill for my wife's C4, we decided to put the idea on the back burner.

Have you looked at camptoo.co.uk? That site is very good and you book direct with owners. Lots of choice on there. Budget £300 for a long weekend.
