I didn’t know whether to put this in here or in the thread on military books. So I’ve put it in both!
The Great War - Joe Sacco
This is simply an awesome piece of work.
There are no words.
There are no pages.
You could flick through it in 2 minutes or you can gaze at it for hours and still see things you hadn’t noticed before.
Using the Bayeaux tapestry as inspiration for design, Sacco has created a single (very long) image depicting the first day of the battle of the Somme. The image is folded so you can fan through it like a book and each fold tells its’ own story whilst being linked to the vignettes either side.
I’ve never seen anything like it!

Slightly left of centre for this thread, but a while ago, I discovered 'BD's or Bandes Dessine which are hardback graphic novels, comic strip format but in French, each about 50 pages long. They are absolutely HUGE in France with whole floors of bookshops dedicated to them and a mixture of subjects from Asterix to err....Erotic, History to...well virtually anything blokey.
I have several volumes including Pre war Grand Prix racing, traditional literature by Pagnol and currently collecting and reading military aircraft fiction.
Not only does it help my French translation along a bit, but the graphics can be fantastic.
My favourites are Le Grand Duc series ...

The illustrations by Romain Hugault are just mind blowing.

Do you subscribed to the comic in the UK, if so, how? I' been looking to subscribe to a few comics and I can't see an easy way to do it I.

Anyone else read Cerebus the Aardvark?
I have been reading it on and off for 25 years. Its only 300 monthly comics worth, but in graphic novel form its epic, and massively weird.
It starts totally derivative, Conan the barbarian in Aardvark form, then drifts with the authors interest and whim into politics, feminism (don't worry, hes really anti women....I think), class war, religion.
Its in no way a light weight Marvel comic, but its fantastic in the quite big sweet spot between derivative and navel gazing.

I love the The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, the second book is just awesome.
The film was pure 100% distilled and reformulated utter piss.
