What with the film coming out in a few days - and a most sumptuous treatment by Ang Lee is promised, so visually it might be quite stunning - is the novel worth the effort?

Any thoughts?

Not sure - I was looking to buy the wife a book for Christmas, but the plot synopsis sound just too barking for words...

Imagine the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour with all the people replaced with psychotic animals and the bus replaced with a boat!

Overall the book is good with some great parts. It does however drag in places.

I read this quite a while back and while I thought it was a good book, it didn't stand out to me as something groundbreaking or make a genuine impression.

Worth a read though.

Read it a few years ago and felt thoroughly absorbed by it... It is a bit 'weird' (in a way that I feel a book can get away with, but makes a film seem daft, so I'll be interested to see what Ang Lee does)...

These things are subjective (someone on here described it along the lines of beautifully writen but conceited the other day and I can see where they're coming from) but ultimately it's won the Booker Prize and inspired what's sure to big a big film (not the either individually mean that much to me) so I'd find it hard to argue that it's not a worth a read!

have you ever seen the ang lee directed film 'the hulk'?

utter ste tbh, althou from the trailers of this, it looks better, dont hold out much hope in the film

Yup, take your point, Slink. It could be a complete rubbish film.

Must admit I still measure Ang Lee by Crouching Rat, Hidden Elephant or whatever it's called.....

Just wondered if the book had better pictures!

Read the book a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.
Saw the movie in 3D last week and was completely blown away.
Photography was excellent. Almost all of the tiger scenes were CGI but you'd never know it.
Must read the book again.

Will try the book after seeing the film- visually sumptuous but ultimately meaningless I thought ; great to watch though and Ang Lee is brilliant as ever
