My husband has just self-published via Troubadour. His book is now available for pre-order on Amazon.
I'm sure he would have got it published eventually but he's a) not very patient and b) the book has a certain shelf-life as it's about a specific drug development (which moves very fast). So he wanted to get it out there.
Anyway, if you're really keen on getting it published rather than self-publishing I would recommend you get this http://www.thewritershandbook.com as he found it really useful (they are not continuing a new edition but the last one 2011 still has loads of stuff/agents/publishers).

Its never been easier to self publish, especially in the digital space, I have published a number of technical, clinical and professional titles on a few different digital channels and have have seen some fantastic interactive ebooks including children's titles that have been created with one of the free tools
that have cropped up

I just put up a separate topic here about the book that I've just published: Here and I mentioned a link to JA Konrath (who has sold over a million ebooks from self publishing - I think it is actually over a million from the Kindle store alone). He has put together a huge free document on how he went about it: http://www.jakonrath.com/writers.htm
I'm trawling through it now...
