I have been given a couple of globes. They are old (late 18th, early 19th century). I need to have them valued and I need to look at the possibility of having them restored - the stands are in poor condition and they've been fixed cheaply previously.

They're table globes (I think) one is celestial, one is the world.

Who should I be speaking to? I have no idea where to start. I think they're amazing to look at but they do need to be cleaned, fixed. I'll only do that if it's worth doing in terms of restoration cost vs value.

Any help would be appreciated.

They look lovely.

These ones look very similar, albeit fully restored:

I would ring them and ask them how much those ones sold for, and describe yours to them, maybe send them some photos if they are interested? That might give you a starting point...

Cheers amit. They are currently away in bath being looked at by a specialist. Based on the many pictures I sent his thoughts are:

Current condition £6k

Restoration cost £5k ish

Value after restoration £25-30k.

He's going to contact a woman he knows who is a globe specialist for her help. He's the best in the country with maps but globes are something he's not a specialist in.

Looking at your link, they look very very similar. Mine are missing the compasses though.
I'll give them a call.

Very interested in the outcome of this. I am sure you know this already, but the "estimate" is only a good guide if you can readily find a buyer for them...having said that, I would imagine that there is a good market for this sort of thing.
