Any experiences of contributory publishing contracts?

Hi all

I submitted a manuscript to a couple of publishers recently and one (fairly reputable I think) has come back with an offer of a contributory contract - in other words, they'll publish it but I have to put some money in too.

My immediate thought is not to do it (have better things to spend the money on!) but wondering if anyone has any experiences?
