It was about a superhero team and the leader was virtually invincible, at some point he got imprisoned on another planet/dimension and lost all of his powers but came back, I think his former team amtes were trying to stop him , he got power mad and in the end turned out he was part of an alien race/experiment and died/returned back to his true form

I don't think it was marvel or dc

Ring any bells ?

This description sounds like the plot of the DC Comics event "Final Crisis".
The leader you're referring to could be Superman, who was indeed imprisoned on another planet and lost his powers.

He eventually returned, but the rest of the Justice League of America was wary of him, suspecting that he had been replaced by an impostor.
It turned out that Superman was part of a larger alien experiment, which was the central conflict of "Final Crisis".

It's possible that you're thinking of the superhero team from the "Wildstorm" comic book universe, which was published by Image Comics.
Wildstorm had several series featuring various superhero teams, and the leader of one of these teams was a character named "The High".
The High was an alien who was part of a god-like race and had god-like powers, but he was later imprisoned and lost his powers.
Eventually, he returned and became power-hungry, leading his former team to try and stop him.

This sounds like it could be the comic book you're thinking of?

Ah it could be , I remember the ending was him turning into energy or something which explained his previous unknown alien heritage , the whole story was in one graphic novel which I cant find , seems the high was in lots of publications?

Based on the description you've provided, it sounds like you may be thinking of the comic book series "WildC.A.T.s" published by Image Comics. The main character in this series, Zealot, is a powerful alien warrior and the leader of the WildC.A.T.s superhero team. At some point in the series, she loses her powers and is imprisoned, but eventually returns to the team. However, as her power increases, she becomes increasingly unhinged and begins to exhibit god-like abilities. In the end, it is revealed that she is part of an alien experiment, and she sacrifices herself to return to her true form.

This series was published in the 1990s and was created by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi.

I think you are talking about irredeemable but Mark Waid. Pastiche of Superman called the Plutonian. But he goes bonkers and the rest of the team, try and fail to stop him.
Some nice touches, like his foster parents only communicating in sign language lest he hear them talking- from anywhere in the world, and come visiting.
